Annotation

This article explores why in the Northern Australian Territory indigenous language speakers shift to the use of creoles and standard or non-standard English. It thereto discusses the deviation between people's positive language attitudes (as signified by public language activities) and their everyday conversation in the light of linguistic vitality markers, covering the socio-structural characteristics of social, economic, cultural and politic control, status and institutional control, and demographic factors as well as interactional opportunities.
