In order to reveal the efficiency of South African subtitling and the degree to which literacy impedes information communication, this article presents detailed conclusions on the reading of L1 Sesotho and L2 English subtitles in a multilingual scenery and examines optimal subtitle presentment for the South African television viewing public.
