This paper concentrates on the Finnish particle cluster ai nii(n) (“oh that's right”), which a speaker may employ when hearing a recipient's answer to his question. Via ai nii(n), the speaker alleges that he effectively already had independent access to the desired information, but did not recollect it until hearing the answer. It is demonstrated that these claims of only-now-remembering are employed as accounts for posing (what appear to be) improper questions.
