Drawing on Bamberg's model, this paper asserts that via its “constructed sequentiality” and its discourse strategy usage, direct reported speech also defines power relations as they are enacted between the referential world story characters. This affects the function of these reported exchanges in the interview setting and the organization of the interviewee's moral position with regard to the local and global context. This paper mainly concentrates on reported exchanges in narratives on slavery.
