This paper draws on Halliday’s transitivity analysis to discuss conflicting national media positions on the 2011 Battle for Tripoli, as reflected in the discursive patterns of the news headlines of the British national daily newspaper The Guardian and the Chinese national daily newspaper The People’s Daily.
