Via an examination of style shifting between Veneto dialect and Standard Italian in a corpus of natural Veneto speech, this paper explores how Veneto speakers promote and consolidate a Veneto identity via resistance to foreigners and the Italian state, and how they negotiate a Veneto transnational identity that extends beyond regional and national frontiers.
