This paper discusses the (language ideology underlying the) hierarchical relationship between Mashreqi (Middle Eastern) and Maghrebi (North African) vernacular Arabic varieties. It focuses on identity politicis and the de/authentication of linguistic Arabness via a prolix examination of a transnational pan-Arab reality/talent TV show, uploaded to YouTube.
