Annotation
In multi-ethnic inner-city UK adolescent peer groups, speakers use the new first person singular pronoun 'man' to position themselves as members of a contextually determined group, thence furnishing authority for their opinions or tempering a potentially face-threatening act. They also employ it to request empathy from their interlocutor or build solidarity.
