Three studies explore whether the observed typicality of a menacing outgroup actor in media messages modifies threat effects on attitudes towards the whole outgroup; and whether outgroup (dis)approbation of the actor affects observed typicality. Outgroup disapprobation appears to protect against menacing effects of negative outgroup conduct in mass media on outgroup attitudes via the lowering of observed typicality.
