Annotation
This article explores The New Yorker's July 2008 political cover cartoon, depicting Barack Obama as a Muslim and Michelle Obama as a Black militant, as well as reader replies, using Simpson (2003)'s model for satirical discourse. It demonstrates
that pragmatic theories on verbal irony and Simpson's model can be productively used for solely visual or verbal and visual-verbal ironic satire.
