This paper asserts that employing the framework of relational work to address directiveness in prenatal screening for Down Syndrome in Chinese clients in Hong Kong, allows researchers to concentrate on meaning production and negotiation at the interactional micro-level, and to abandon “big generalizations” on culture specific conduct and suppositions.
