In a field hockey players’ community of practice, two moral priorities clash: a dislike of homosexuality on the one hand, and a want for a kindly, socially inclusive club on the other. Drawing on redefined politeness, this paper asserts that the evaluative label “im/mature” serves as a way of covering up the conflict and upholding an engagement to both.
