This article explores how French and German exchange students at a Mexican university address and tackle the use of the usually offensive Spanish word güey. Results suggest that students grasp the friendly intention underlying the use of anti-normative politeness yet fail to wholly value “positive politeness” (Brown and Levinson 1987), a vital quality of Mexican interpersonal language use.
