This paper concentrates on tensions that make educational reforms (towards vernacular and culturally based education) in contemporary Oceania hard to realize: tensions between State rationale and indigenous requests, between ‘equal chances’ in school and race or culture based prejudice; and between the several motivations for vernacular education (ancestral, political, pedagogical).
