This paper reviews the varied language ideologies and cultural models that inspire Hawaiian-language learners' experiences, practices, and socio-ethnic identity as they try to become heritage language speakers. It concentrates on the meaning of learning Hawaiian for new speakers and learners, and the ideologies that affect these apprehensions.
