This article explores whether and to what degree UK university undergraduates' knowledge about language (KaL) has decreased over three decades since 1986, and how this could be linked to university instruction and the English school-leaving A-level tests. University-level instruction does seem to ameliorate awareness of and faculty to employ grammatical terminology.
