This paper explores the commonalities of the Melbourne urban migrant experiences among Italian, Vietnamese and Sudanese groups, and indicates how ecological factors distinguish each group. It concentrates on aspects of what Mufwene labelled the varieties' external ecology (i.e. socioeconomic, ethnographic and contact settings and power relations).
