Annotation

K. argues that J.R. Ross's purely syntactic approach to relativization should be replaced by a functional approach, a basic thematic constraint being that a relative clause should be a statement about the head noun; the speaker's attitude towards the participants in the event or state described both in the relative clause and in the matrix clause is shown to be another important factor determining the grammaticality of sentences with relative clauses.
