This article addresses some main discrepancies between the child-rearing values of a mixed American-English and Hong Kong-Cantonese couple, as revealed in contrasting child-rearing-linked speech behaviour. A major contrast concerns parents' beliefs regarding children's self-determination as to appropriate speech and conduct.
