This paper argues that Coffin and O'Halloran's (2006) ‘dog-whistling’ theory unveils covert ('us versus them') meanings underlying supposedly ‘balanced views' of the racially-sensitive murder of white supremacist Eugène Terre'Blanche in editorials from three South African newspapers.
