This study explores the pragmatic strategies of ballet students' self-praise performance in microblogging posts. This group is considered a community of practice involved in the construction of a ‘hero’ identity for professional dancers that contains required physical and sociolinguistic ability. Self-praise centered around ballet-linked properties seems to be usual in this community of practice. Four mitigation strategies appeared in the data: self-praise plus disclaimer, self-praise plus self-deprecation, self-praise plus focus change, and self-praise plus allusion to hard work. Finally, self-praise on Twitter may be indirectly executed, by framing self-praise as a third party complaint.
