In contrast to traditional disagreement avoidance in other US contexts and communities of practice, disagreements in Virginia gifted classes, grades 5–8, appeared notably less softened. Gifted classes thus form another interactional context in which disagreements stay unmarked and do not seem to subvert interactants' solidarity. This study presents additional empirical support for the contention that disagreement is not intrinsically face-threatening and must be contextualized.
