This study discusses the current action- and meaning-oriented approaches of conversation analysis (CA), in relation to the treatment of ‘preference’. It proposes to omit the action-oriented approach and deal instead with meaning. Its generalizations do not refer to what interactants usually do but to the resources they hold and the methods they utilize in generating meaning and social organization.
