This study discusses the utilization of strong disagreement as facework and relationship management strategy by non-familial, equal-status Mandarin-speaking participants in spontaneous mundane conversations in a southeastern city of mainland China. Participants co-constructed strong disagreement to perform facework and manage relationships without any demonstration of negative assessments. Even some face-threatening cases still worked to preserve interactants’ relationships. This study underlines the significance of locating research in local contexts and the need to review stereotypes regarding Chinese. The results can foster the comprehension of intercultural communication that comprises native Chinese speakers.
