Annotation

This study explores the L2 identities of native English-speaking intermediate-level Spanish learners by combining the methods of production and metapragmatic judgments, and focusing on T/V address forms (tú and usted). Whilst some learners founder to systematically produce their proper address forms, embarrassing their selfconstructed exemplary L2 identities, others show a dexterity at equalling their production and their judgments. It is thus proposed that further research on L2 pragmatics and L2 identity progresses beyond a focus on L2 pragmatic competence and moves toward a contemplation of learners’ indexical awareness and agency.
