Drawing on a bottom-up, empirical study of word in the British National Corpus, wherein word appears as very figurative, and its metonymic uses (55%) as much more frequent than its metaphorical uses (24%), yet with some overlay, this study demonstrates that metonymy is a powerful phenomenon that, at least in the semantic domain of verbal communication, may be more important than the more-investigated phenomenon of metaphor.
