This article advocates a pragmatically grounded reappraisal of cohesion-based methods of information retrieval during understanding, proposing a relevance-based approach as eligible for both descriptive and explanatory reasons. It states that interpretively employed and echoic expressions query the text-constitutive capacity of cohesion and debates some cases that appear problematic in solely cohesion-based approaches but are directly accounted for by the Relevance-Theoretic account.
