Employing transcripts of interviews with female ex-colonials in Belgian Congo, this paper discusses how the interviewer, an ex-colonial himself, interactionally subordinates the interviewees, which enables him, despite interviewee face threat, to frame women as being otiose both in 1950s-society generally and more particularly in the tale world of Belgian Congo, whilst concurrently evading any face threat to that colonial society.
