Annotation

This paper explores how coping laughter is applied to deal with disagreements' face-menacing relational aspects rather than with their factual content. The four analyzed particular functions of coping laughter are: face-threat softening, face-loss cover-up, grave-to-nongrave frame shift, and topic change facilitation. Which of these functions are fullfilled hinges on various contextual factors, such as who starts off the laughter, other participants' reaction, and the interactional context and participant roles.
