Analyzing the link between context and grammar, this study rejects Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG)’s postulation that the Contextual Component should only hold features with a systematic effect on grammar. The concepts of ‘activation’ and ‘sharedness’ for instance are stated fit to grasp the motivation of the syntactic processes of subject raising and extraction from NPs, and should thus get a place in the model. It is argued that these pragmatic dimensions could be integrated into grammar through unmarked pragmatic groupings or content frames.
