Annotation
Using Goffman’s (1981) concept of Footing, this study explores three distinct speaking roles (storyteller, interlocutor, and animator) that lawyers may take on, and deviate from, in the monologic opening statements in (three high-profile) American trials. lawyers can indeed subtly render the discourse argumentative and suggestive of inferences. Such discursive practices appear to directly challenge the opening statement's aim.
