This paper explores how intertextual dynamics influence the negotiation of defendants' moral responsibility in the Belgian Assize Court, the ambiguity of Belgian criminal law concepts linked to moral liability unlocking a huge potential for negotiation and multiple concept interpretations. The paper addresses the consequences of local irresponsibility constructions for the evaluation of criminal debt and considers the connection between lay and professional input in the verdict.
