Annotation

Using Goffman’s footing concept, this study shows how the discursive creation of a legal fact is moderated by the intricate interaction of positionings the attorney adopts towards the client, judge and other trial partakers, and written documents generated during prior trial phases. The dissolution of the circumstanced practice of client representation into a structure of varying footing templates thus also adds to grasping the intertextual organization of courtroom discourse.
