Annotation
This paper discusses the sociolinguistics and the socio-cultural process of the manner in which the Yiddish pragmatic and idiomatic substrate becomes progressively apparent in Modern Israeli Hebrew speech and literature, comparing two translations of Sholem Aleichem's Tevye der milchiker. It is claimed that Miron's (2009) translation success derives from the fact that particularly informal Modern Hebrew is saturated with Yiddish expressions and iterates some Yiddish folk discourse traits. The paper thus elucidates the intricate twofold pragmatic and idiomatic facets of the Yiddisch-Modern Hebrew contact.
