This paper uses Blommaert's (2010) conceptual framework for a new approach to "the sociolinguistics of globalization'' for exploring a multi-vocalic performance in Central Java, building diverse identities in their native context. The integration of the examples of naturally arising cosmopolitanism into an academic English text offers an occasion for critical reflection on Western practices of inquiry and presentation of the semiotics of other people's identity practices.
