This paper debates English speech sounds perception and production by Cantonese English as a second language learning university students in Hong Kong and explores the reliability of the Speech Learning Model claims in accounting for these learners' speech production. It is shown that speech perception and production do not constitute a rigid one-to-one relation, and right target sound perception does not unavoidably causes proper production.
