Annotation

Imperial penetration patterns and sociopolitical conditions in various former Soviet regions were diverging, as were Russians’ self-designation patterns. This paper discusses causes of the rather ‘cold’ ethnic stance of Russians in post-Soviet Central Asia, like the strikingness of sociocultural versus ethnic borders, the character of local political authorities, the role of Russian language and culture, official and popular Soviet past explanation and stances towards modern Russia.
