Novel northern European language policies have instituted parallel national language use in order to assure university students' right to obtain home language education and to shield the national language(s) from the ‘menace’ of English 'spread as international instructional language. Based on data from a main Swedish university, this paper argues that academic literacy development in English is often confused with a want to attain native-like competence.
