This corpus-based study discusses the rise of Cantonese and the attendant fall of English in Hong Kong's Legislative Council since the early 1970s, during a period of unmatched political, economic and social upheaval with a special focus on the transitional 1990s, and ponders the future roles of Cantonese and Putonghua.
