This study argues that Korean other-initiation of repair with a particle usually signals dissent, surprise, or unbelief, whereas repair initiating without a particle operates as a comprehension check. The study also presents eventual accounts for how and why particle inclusion performs a negatively assessed action in Korean. Korean data come with an English translation.
