This paper examines the social relevance of the popular ‘(Hong) Kong Girl’ stereotype by exploring the role of stancetaking in online forum discussions. Focusing on a 2005 incident including ‘Jenny’, it is shown how forum participants try to manage late modern Hong Kong's sociohistorical changes by situating Jenny and themselves within a changing heterosexual marketplace. The fiery dispute points to altering gender ideologies that are applying pressure on both men and women and supply the backdrop for the Kong Girl stereotype rise, which knows its media heyday in the years after 2005.
