Applying Wodak’s discourse-historical method, this paper examines attested examples of ‘emigration-as-problem’ Irish political elite discourse from the 1970s. As these elite discourses employ protraction strategies of argument to portray emigration as negative event, it is proposed that such strategies hold considerable social functions concerning the formation of a jackstraw argument for the government and in adding to the image of the Irish at home.
