This critical discourse analytic study explores how Ohio county welfare-to-work program managers deploy diverse discursive strategies to justify their good worker identities whilst offsetting negative connotations linked with administering welfare policy. Managers use ‘classtalk’ in their contrasts in a manner that condemns the poor via contrasts with others bearing ‘middle-class values’.
