Annotation

Life stories of female foreign domestic helpers (FDHs) in Hong Kong, jotted down in a church shelter, appear trauma narratives featured by recurring crying. These crying events need to be considered as discursive performances amid group members. Exploring possible functions of crying and its (un)desirability as emotional expression, this paper presents the first step towards a social psychological theory of crying in discourse.
