Annotation

The various language ideologies of reciprocal and hierarchical multilingualism, and linguistic (l) pragmatism and (l) nationalism have formed the sociolinguistic history of Solomon Islands' lingua franca, Pijin. This paper concentrates on the expansion and fusion of linguistic ideologies which causes changing perceptions of Pijin in Pijin speakers in a setting of urban identity construction, and may engender a re-assessment of the meaning of symbolic authority of one language (here: English) over another (Pijin).
