Annotation

As European listeners, without prior Wolof knowledge, achieved similar percentages of correct answers, when listening to recordings of Senegalese Wolof speakers, as to speaker social status, as Senegalese listeners, this paper claims that the imposed norm hypothesis, which forecasts that sociolinguistic traits cannot be deduced by those without previous contact with a community, ought to be revised and broadened to cover a more general, and therefore subtle, perspective of language.
