Annotation

This paper explores how social stereotypes affect male listeners' perceptions of indexical language of the traversing categories of gender, sexuality, and social class in the UK. Social meaning perception appears ruled by a blend of both attitudinal and cognitive factors. This elucidates the listener-dependent character of sociolinguistic perception. It also offers additional empirical backing for a comprehension of social meaning as a rising attribute of language-in-use.
