Annotation

A study of the vowel systems of 36 African American speakers in the Philadelphia Neighborhood Corpus compares their 20th century sound development with that of the White mainstream community. For vowels connected with change in the white community, African Americans demonstrate very diverging patterns, often working in reverse directions. Given segregated life, linguistic contact mainly spreads among adults rather than by the trustworthy transferral amidst children.
