Annotation
This first acoustic sociophonetic study of central New Hampshire shows that youngsters get rid of many classic eastern New England (ENE) pronunciations in favor of leveled, nonregional forms, yet the changes are impacting some variables more swiftly than others. This study is framed in terms of Sankoff's (2013a) “age vectors” concept and Labov's (2012) language faculty's “outward orientation”, elucidating how various generations are utilizing manifold age vectors within the same general shift, and how one variable can outshine another one within the same syllable.
