Annotation
This paper examines potential accounts for 'unusual', native-like outcomes in late starters' second language (L2) phonology, and particularly, whether such learner skills are driven by inherent talent, a metacognitive acquisition approach, a specific social-psychological orientation, or particular types of experience. Comparing several learner profiles, an argument is made for the critical factors of learner engagement and self-regulation, and future research areas are delineated.
